A series, highlighting the published work of Calne Writers' Group members.
In the past few years, Brian Gardner has produced an outstanding body of work that showcases his talent for storytelling, from personal reflections to alternative history. In 2022, No Cross-Country for Old Men, a heartfelt memoir of a life with and without running was published and has been called Scotland’s answer to Once a Runner by Justin Reid, former international cross-country runner, who went on to say, "Always keen to read books about running but few (if any) have ever managed to capture the essence and excitement of what it means to live those dreams day in day out and the sheer enjoyment it can bring. Brian balances perfectly his love and need for running with the other ups and downs in his life. You can tell this comes from the heart and is a genuinely great read."
As Others See Us, is an offbeat collection of stories about a dark side of life, published in 2023.
This year, Brian has released the co-written David Sharpe; Enigma on Track; Wild Child to World Champion with David Sharpe. A hilarious yet poignant autobiography of a genuine character of world class running
The World Cross, is Brian's 2024 novel of running, coming of age and mystery and what might have been: Three six-year-old boys leave Glasgow in 1962 for new lives in other parts of the world. Eventually they meet on their return to Glasgow in 1978, for the World Cross-Country Championship. They discover that they have more in common besides running, having experienced different traumas, but with the same mystery to solve. The race is run, questions are answered, and destinies are determined.
The World Cross-Country Championships really did take place in Glasgow in 1978. This is an alternative running history of what might have been. There are vivid descriptions of training and races, and passages of lively dialogue and quiet reflection. The World Cross is gritty, edgy, humorous and challenges the taken-for-granted.
