Heart of the community became a registered charity in June 2021, the following month it moved to Colemans farm in Angell Close, off Foreman Street with its two active volunteers.
Early days were challenging, but as the volunteer base grew, we were able to expand our operational times and our activities.
Almost a year later, we have 9 amazing active volunteers that enable us to open 6 days a week:-
Monday - Thursday - 11am - 4pm
Friday - 11am - 8pm
Saturday - 11am - 2pm
We are grateful for the hard work our founding members put in to enable Heart of the Community to achieve some of its goals.
In addition to our lunchtime hot meals that are offered every day there is also:-
- Afternoon tea on a Tuesday - 2pm - 4pm
- Seated sports every Thursday at Noon
- Also once a month we have our amazing resident hairdresser who gives her time on the 1st Monday of each month
- We have our Autism peer support group (once a month)
And this is alongside our seasonal activities we run including:-
- Easter activities for our younger community
- Colouring and crafting in the summer holidays
- Spooky parties and pumpkin carving and not forgetting our Christmas lunch.
It is a privilege to serve the community the way we do and all our volunteers feel honoured to give their time to give something back to the community in all of these activities we offer.
One of the things we pride ourselves in is listening to the community to enable us to engage with them in a meaningful way and Heart of the Community realised very quickly that there was a real issue with social isolation and that company was just as important as food.
Through listening, Heart of the Community are able to support our community members that struggle financially, emotionally and mentally through offering a safe space for people to meet and form friendships.
